Lucid Dream Aids

(by Robin, with some additions by Leslie)

As mentioned in a previous post, one of the things we're spending our time doing up here in Alaska is trying to learn to lucid dream. What that means is that you realize in your dream that you're dreaming, so that you can act upon it by, say, deciding to fly like Supeman, or play killer lead guitar with Spinal Tap, or maybe just be able to realize that the nightmare you're experiencing is merely a dream.

There are a whole lot of things one can do to help the process of learning to lucid dream. Here's a how-to list for lucid dreaming. For those who don't hit the link, note that keeping a dream journal is crucial. We are doing that.

Beyond that, one of the big techniques it to frequently "reality test" in your waking life, so that when you are dreaming you also continue to "reality test." When you fail the "reality test" in your dream, you know you are dreaming!  Here is a list of some reality tests.

In addition, you are supposed to note what are called "dream signs" in your dream journal. These are things that wouldn't occur in your waking life, such as flying, being in a past or future time, traveling to outer space, being married to someone who's not your real spouse.  The idea is that if you learn to recognize your "dream signs" while dreaming, this will trigger you to realize that it is in fact a dream rather than waking life.

Leslie and I are really not very good at doing all these things.  Frankly, we don't care all that much.  If we lucid dream, cool!  If we don't, we have lots of dreams in our dream journal, which is also cool.

That said, there are some chemical aids to induction.  The list is quite long, but two things are considered particularly helpful: choline and galantamine in combination.  We bought them in a combo called Brilliant Dreams.  Brilliant Dreams has 100 mg. of choline, but most folks recommend 400 mg, of choline so we bought 300 mg. choline caps to supplement.  Brilliant dreams also has melatonin and Vitamin B in it.

our dream pills

We haven't been taking these pills as we have been concentrating on aurora watching (which requires lots of frequent waking to see if the aurora is out and watching it if it is) and didn't want to combine the two. But since we've just had a couple of wildly successful aurora nights, we decided to not really monitor the aurora for a couple of days.  Last night we took the supplements for the first time.  Read the (great) results here and here.
