Weather Report - April 15th.

First, I just want to acknowledge that today is the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking.  This blog writer summed up its significance:
This was a turning point for mankind’s relationship with technology; it was the moment at which we recognized that “modern advances” were—would continue to be—a double-edged sword. Technology was (by definition) a powerful tool that could hurt us as well as harm us. This insight was available to anyone who was truly paying attention during the Edwardian Era, but it grabbed headlines after the Titanic sank, taking 1,514 people with her.
I have no easy way to link the above with my weather report below, so I won't try.

I just want you to know that it isn't winter here anymore!
The month of March was one of the coldest on record, averaging just 4.6 degrees.  But, there was a turn in the weather on March 24, the first day we saw any snow melting.  From March 1-23, the average high was 11 degrees F.  From March 23-April 1, the average high was 36 degrees F.  A 25 degree jump!  This last week, the average high has actually been 46 F, and highs are forecast to be in the 50s for the next ten days.

In that time, there has been only trace snow and a dab of rain and almost no wind.  Lots of sun.  The fact is that 40 degrees in the windless, dry, sunny conditions of Fairbanks actually feels more like 55 or 60.

It's awesome!   They say that the breakup is really ugly, muddy and mucky.  Maybe that is to come but right now it is just spectacular watching the snow and ice melt.

Each new day revealing a little more dirt or lawn or the fallen leaves of fall.  I wouldn't trade it for Santa Cruz or Hilo right now.

  1. Hi, Robin--The melt on March 24, of course, coincides with Smiley's birthday. Of course it is: I melted the night we met. We celebrate that meeting every February 23 with a sip or two at 5 o'clock. Indeed, we celebrate it every day in the same way. Love to all our Sourdoughs from us both.
