People: Steve from Hawaii
Featured: a 2000 "race" by newcomers through Alaska
I was reading a brochure about a 2000 mile "race" for people new to Alaska to learn about the state. The rules are that any form of ground transportation is fine and, really, everybody is a winner so no need to do it quickly. It is the Alaskan race for no-talent newbies from the lower 48. In the glossy brochure for the race was a picture of a friend from Hawaii, Steve, who had done the race and recommends it to all newcomers. I thought, "yeah, but Steve is really fit and iron-mannish...he is not a no-talent." It looked uninviting to me.
Annotation
Steve is a geology professor in Hilo and an avid cyclist who is very fit indeed.
The Iron Dog, a 2000 mile snowmachine race, has just happened. The Iditarod, a 1050 mile race, is about to begin. There are races of one kind or another in the sports page most days. And the people who do them are...to be admired. But it's crazy cold, very arduous, and entirely beyond any but the most dedicated folks. So, this dream clearly sprang from all that.
Nice to know we are in your thoughts all the way from Hawaii!
ReplyDeleteHey...you were in MY dream last night, Robin! Leslie was named but not seen. I rarely remember my dreams, but I think reading about yours has made me retain more.
ReplyDeleteMiss you both.
